How Is MuseFlow Different?

Many approaches to teaching music expect you to practice a piece of music over... and over... and over!

Often, the more you play, the joy of playing music decreases because you have to spend so much time, technically perfecting a piece.

What's enjoyable is making decisions on that piece, when you've perfected it.

That’s where MuseFlow comes in!MuseFlow brings you to that Next Level of Mastery. So you can discover (or re-discover) the joy of music.

From: Patrick Boylan, cofounder
Subject Line: Why We Created MuseFlow
Maybe like you, my musical journey began as a child.

I actually asked my parents for music lessons because we had a piano. I said, “Hey, can I take piano lessons?”

And they said, “You know, it’s a lifelong habit. It’s a lifelong journey to learn an instrument.”

I said, “I’m game! I want to do it. It sounds fun. It sounds great.” So I started taking lessons, and....

I hated it.

I couldn’t stand it. I didn’t like the traditional way of learning how to play an instrument.

You know, you get a new note, a new rhythm, a new time signature—whatever it may be—a new skill from a teacher. And then they give you one song, maybe two if you’re lucky, to practice that specific skill in the context of that one song. You have to practice it to boredom, repeating it over and over until it’s ingrained in your mind.

Then you go back to your teacher, and you have to play it for them verbatim. They stamp their approval, or you go back to do it again for another week.

That kind of journey just didn’t work for my brain. And....

I knew it didn’t work for a lot of people....

Want to know how I’m so sure?

The dropout rate for music is crazy—it’s 85% by the end of high school.

And you think, “Why aren’t people continuing to play past high school?”

Here’s my thought: this way of teaching has been around for thousands of years, and there’s never been another option until now.......

but I don’t want to jump ahead just yet...

When my music teacher retired, I ended up going back to my parents’ sheet music after a few months of just stopping, because I was burned out.

I went back to some sheet music that my parents had, and I found little bits, little phrases, or motifs that I was drawn to—whether I liked the pattern, the melody, or how it was played.I memorized those phrases, closed the book, and started improvising around them.

I thought, “That was really fun!” I’d explore each phrase fully, then go back to the sheet music and find other phrases I enjoyed.

After doing this over and over, I realized something... I was recognizing these phrases and concepts in other songs. I could play them on sight.

That’s the process that really taught me how to play piano. And now, I’m a professional pianist.

This is what inspired us to create a brand-new process like no one has ever seen...

That’s where technology comes in.

Using artificial intelligence, we can deliver an infinite amount of sheet music.

With MuseFlow, you play until you’ve proven mastery over a new skill. Once you achieve that, you apply that new skill to songs that get unlocked.

This music education approach is only possible with an infinite amount of sheet music, and that’s where technology has allowed us to create something truly new.

Here’s the beautiful thing...

You’ll absolutely LOVE the process of learning how to play!

You’ll be in a state of flow - where you lose track of time cause you’re so engaged in the process.

The music just keeps going, and you choose where you want to go next.

It’s a whole new way of learning music.
Outperforms Traditional Methods

"When compared to traditional methods, the interactive way of working--and real-time, immediate feedback on incorrect notes or its length--simply outperforms traditional methods approach."

Locked and Learning

"MuseFlow is amazing! My nephew sat down at the keyboard and he was locked in for at least 40 minutes before I had to pull him away. He was totally in that flow state. It's not only amazing to learn to sight read music, it's amazing to watch someone else learn!"

- Julia A.

Where Did This Concept Of “Flow” Come From?

In simple terms, Flow is being “in the zone.”

It’s when your skill and the challenge are perfectly matched, so you’re fully absorbed in what you’re doing.

The idea of "Flow State" was introduced in the 1970s by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who studied how people find happiness and reach peak performance.

In his research he found that reaching Flow is one of life’s most fulfilling experiences.

(that’s worth repeating)

“reaching Flow is one of life’s most fulfilling experiences.”

When you are in Flow, you can push your skills without feeling stressed or bored.

This mindset is perfect for learning complex skills, like sight reading music.

For musicians, being in Flow means feeling a deep connection to your instrument, where learning feels natural and creativity shines. When you're in the zone like this, you experience a deep sense of satisfaction.

What Does Being “In The Flow” Even Mean?

You’ve likely experienced "being in the flow" many times before...

Maybe it was while working on a favorite hobby... playing a sport... or diving into a project that completely captured your attention.

In those moments, everything seems to click—you are focused, energized, and fully present... Time seems to fly by... distractions fade away...

This is the essence of being “in the flow.”

It’s a state where challenge and skill align perfectly, letting you push your abilities without feeling overwhelmed.

Imagine bringing that same level of focus and enjoyment to your piano practice, where each session feels natural, rewarding, and fun.

With MuseFlow,  tool to help you reach that state while learning sight reading and improving your skills. By deliver

Dopamine Rush from Learning!

“Let’s go!! I was able to keep myself in the Flow state by first dropping the tempo so it wouldn’t be too frustrating. Then I got comfortable, then before it became too easy to the point of boring I reattempted it at goal tempo and I passed. What a rush of dopamine from completing the level that initially I couldn’t do!!”

Here's What Music Educators, Professors, and Academic Researchers Say About Sight Reading

Skilled sightreaders can recognize larger rhythm and pitch patterns, drawing on their knowledge of musical styles to anticipate what comes next.Sight reading is a crucial skill for musicians, particularly pianists. Sight reading enables a pianist to navigate new pieces quickly and accurately.
“The ability to sight read rhythms is closely linked to overall sight reading ability, with rhythmic errors often outweighing all other types of errors.” (McPherson)
“Sight reading is a complex skill that relies heavily on reading the score, generating adequate fingering, and executing corresponding motor responses in a smooth fashion at or near performance tempo.” (Lehmann and Ericsson)
Learning to sight read provides rhythm, structure, and style-focused training. This ability helps  piano players read music intuitively and become more versatile, responsive musicians.
"Sight reading proficiency extends beyond technical skills; it is closely tied to a musician’s understanding of musical language, including knowledge of form and style and the perception of phrase structure." (Sloboda)
“Professional musicians are required to not only give a wonderful performance, but also to prepare thoroughly for that performance with as little practice time as possible.

Pianists, especially, have many opportunities to
quickly learn large numbers of new accompaniment pieces, because soloists often ask them to accompany their concert performances after they begin their training.

This constant demand requires pianists to
prepare under significant time constraints while reading more notes simultaneously than most other instrumentalists.

As such..
sight reading is one of the most important abilities for professional pianists.

- Professors Eriko Aiba and Toshie Matsui

The Importance Of Sight Reading For Piano Players

So if sight reading is so important, it should be easier to learn by now, right?

It depends...

You see learning any new skill can be difficult, at any age. But it doesn’t have to be difficult.

If you try to learn sight reading using older techniques, you'll likely get frustrated, burnt out, or bored.

That’s why we used cutting-edge science and technology to create an innovative way of learning that..

matches the exact way you learn best.

...learning is deeply personal.

That’s why MuseFlow tailors your sight reading experience to you--to your unique level and goals, creating a pathway that grows with you.

Whether you’re refining your sight reading, mastering a new rhythm, or reaching for higher levels of expression, MuseFlow provides the structure and support to help you achieve mastery.

So... why is MuseFlow so different than any other solution on the market?

MuseFlow Harnesses Technology to Accelerate  Your Mastery

Consider the “floor” and “ceiling” of your current musical ability.

The “floor” represents what you’re fluent in—what you can play confidently without extra practice. The “ceiling” is what you can play with unlimited practice.

When the gap between the two widens, the enjoyment of playing decreases because you spend more time focusing on technique rather than on the musicality of each piece.

MuseFlow raises your “floor,” helping you play with more ease and enjoyment.

With each note you play, MuseFlow adapts your exercises.  You work on exercises that match your current level and that move you continually progress.
Huge Leap Forward

“Thank you MuseFlow! I don’t think I’ve ever been this good at reading music. It never made sense to me before.”
